Album sales would go through the roof, and we would be the envy of millions. At least, that was the fantasy. Anyone who has actually attempted to form a rock band soon learns the truth about the music industry and one unknown band's place in it. A real band requires extreme dedication from all of its members, a fanatical rehearsal schedule, and enough word-of-mouth advertising to be considered for paying gigs. Forming a successful band is difficult at best, and few bands survive the first formative years completely unscathed.

For those who are considering forming a working rock band, you may want to consider these five common reasons that bands break up, so you can recognize the warning signs before it is too late.Read more...

Related articles:
Quality private music instruction
Vocal chord anatomy and music
Music to affect mood
How music affects your mood
Consumer Guide: Used CD's Online

http://www.essortment.com/in/Music.General/index.htm

Quality private music instruction

Private music instruction is something many parents seek out for the kids. The most common times to look for music instruction is either at the beginning of the summer, or when school’s starting again. When choosing a music teacher or school, there are several factors to consider.

First, what instrument does your child play or want to play? If it is piano or violin, chances are there are several teachers in the area who can teach it. If it is something less common, such as bassoon or string bass, there may be few if any teachers in your area. If there is only one teacher in your area for your child’s instrument, don’t immediately hire him or her. Look at his credentials to see if he is qualified to teach this instrument. If you can’t find a well-qualified teacher in your area, you may need to look elsewhere.

The places you can look for quality teachers include: local music shops (to make recommendations or teach in-house lessons), local universities, local school music teachers, the phone book (private music schools will be listed), or through word of mouth. Ask friends for their children’s teachers’ names. Get recommendations from any school music teachers or music shop owners in your area. Make sure you get multiple recommendations.Read more...

Related articles:
Quality private music instruction
Vocal chord anatomy and music
Music to affect mood
How music affects your mood
Consumer Guide: Used CD's Online

http://www.essortment.com/in/Music.General/index.htm

How to freestyle rap

<font face="arial" size"2">Freestyle rap is a lost art in the world of modern Hip-Hop. Currently, today's rap deals with living lavishly, promiscuity, and gangster type violence. This form of hip-hop is usually written down and memorized. Even if the music is not memorized initially, the artist is usually, hurried into the studio by the producer who arranges beats that correspond to the mood and theme of the lyrics. Once the homogenized product is ready, the song is mass-produced and distributed to the general public, and the record company sits back until the profits roll in. This method pales in comparison to hip-hops humble beginnings. In the beginning, hip hop was simple: two turntables, a mixer, equalizer, and large speaker would usually be enough to provide the audio effect that was needed for a local house party or recreation center event. These events were impromptu and often happened in a nearby park as well.Read more...

Related articles:
CD data base: Inventory your music
How to create your own music performance contract
Promote your bands performance
Hints for getting a record deal
Learn to read music
Building a press kit for your band
Become a better singer: basic vocal techniques

http://www.essortment.com/in/Music.General/index.htm

New opera

For many newcomers to opera, overweight women in heavy costumes screaming in a foreign language do not make for a pleasant evening’s entertainment. In fact, the entire opera scene is quite overwhelming as well-dressed patrons erupt into spontaneous applause or throw roses to the stage. During intermission they debate about things called arias and recitatives, or gush over so-and-so’s performance in La Traviata. You, on the other hand, can’t seem to figure out with all the enthusiasm is about, and have even caught yourself nodding off during long stretches of incomprehensible Italian babble. Should you simply resign yourself to the fact that you are not opera patron material? Not just yet. Few people are born enjoying one of the world’s oldest and most popular art forms. Plus, the teens (around 15), especially the girls it seems , are very eager to have new tones (especially when their friends don't have it), and not only coming from the top 40, I tested that with my nieces.

If this article is titled "MIDI is your best friend", that's because the best tool for creating ringtones is using a plain old (or new) MIDI sequencer, for at least 90% of the market.

Two cases are involved:

Monophonic ringtones
They represent currently around 80% of the market. This number is based on real life observation (which can be subjective), but also derived from researches on the Internet.

If you browse the following report: http://www.cellular-news.com/story/9663.shtml, you will see that Nokia has 50% of the European market, and that modern phones (what they call "converged devices") represent "more than 5%" of sales. Which means, if you read it the other way, that traditional phones still represent 90 to 95% of their sales.

In China (the exploding market for mobile phones), "old" GSM networks still represent 80% of the market, according to the following survey: http://www.telecom.globalsources.com/MAGAZINE/TS/0301/GSM.HTM

Different formats
Monophonic ringtones formats were never really normalised, and numerous formats still coexist. To name a few:

- RTTTL (RingTone Text Transfer Language) is a simple text format describing the ringtone.
- RTX is an extension to RTTL, allowing to "loop" the ringtones.
- "Nokia Keypress", or "Nokia composer" is used when you want (or have) to enter directly the ringtone into the phone.
- Nokia Binary, also known as SCKL, because all the messages begin by //SCKL. This format allows to send (by SMS) ringtones to some Nokia phones and other brands. (All the Nokia specifications, including "Smart Messaging", and which model supports which feature, are available at Forum Nokia, usually in PDF format. Some documents can be accessed freely, for some other documents you have to register, which is a simple - and free - process).

In short, to create monophonic ringtones (e.g., in the original RTTTL format developed for Nokia), you are supposed to type endless sequences of text commands, and sometimes rather cryptic ones.

Now, since we're musicians, I suppose that most of us (if not all) have access to a MIDI sequencer, or at least something able to create MIDI files.

You then work in the comfort of your usual environment, with tools built for musicians, rather than phone geeks. The "only" difficulty (even in the MIDI environment) is the basic limitations of "old" mobile phones: No note lower than A4 (which I guess would display as A3 in most sequencers. In Logic, it appears either as A3 or A2 depending on the options).

No ringtone longer than 20 seconds. Why 20? Because most operators (your mileage may vary) will switch the caller to your voice mail after 21 seconds, which means the one receiving the call will never hear the end of your beautiful creation.

Plus a lot of phones cannot handle more than 20, 50, 70, etc. notes. If you want your ringtone to "loop" (i.e., repeat), it should be between 10 to 15 seconds (I personally refuse to use my creativity for 5 seconds only).

The art of conversion
Once your MIDI file is completed, you only have to use various tools found on the Internet (some of them are free), to create the various formats according to the target phones. I will mention two of these tools:

Ringtone Converter, even the free trial version, is very good at handling MIDI to RTTTL conversion, even if the original MIDI file contains several tracks. The full version knows most of the current formats.

Ring Tone Tools is a great program, basically able to convert to and from all the popular (and even not so popular, such as kws - Kyocera's ringer format) formats. In addition, Ring Tone Tools is freeware, if you do not intend to use it for commercial purposes (and even then, only a donation of 30$ or more is required). It is command line driven, which can be challenging for some, but there?s a good reason for this: Since this program is available for nearly every platform (and sources are available!), it can be installed on a server, and provide "on the fly" conversion, in the format requested by the user of your Web site. Command line driven means also you can automate your conversions, by creating simple "batch" scripts.

Polyphonic ringtones
I have so far only investigated recent Nokia phones. The very interesting approach from Nokia is that they use straight MIDI files, with a few bytes added at the beginning, which anybody with a Sysex editor should be able to add easily.

If they use MIDI files as the primary format, it's because they have embedded a MIDI GM module in their phones.

The "great" limitation (in some of these phones, such as the popular 3510i) is that the polyphony is 4 notes only. One is easy (usually the voice or something), 16 is "normal", but 4 is a real challenge. Now, for more advanced phones, the polyphony goes from 16 to 70 notes, which should be sufficient for everyone's creativity. Of course, in a not so far future, they will use Wav, MP3s, or whatever to allow (what Nokia calls) "natural sounds".

But, in the mean time, you - at least me - have to deal with the phones Joe and Joette Public have available, which means using MIDI. A rough estimation would be 80 percent of "old" monophonic phones, 20% of polyphonic phones, from which at least 10% should be MIDI based Nokia's.

An example in real life
If you're curious to see how an indie musician can create (and distribute) his own ringtones, and to see what some of the different formats look like, feel free to browse the ringtones page on my web site: Didier et les Ombres ringtones.

I started this because I was tired of hearing "Nokia tune" everywhere, and to see endless pop-ups offering the same top 40 ringtones on the Internet. And it's a great feeling, when you call a friend or a fan, to know he will hear your song.

All the files on my site are based on the tools and techniques described in this article.

The way the things are going, the ringtones market could quickly become more important than the music industry, and there's no reason the indies should be left behind. The Most Significant Bit of a status byte is always 1, the Most Significant Bit of a data byte is always 0. The maximum length for a standard MIDI message is three bytes but for some types of MIDI message the length can be less.

Status

Data 1

Data 2

1 t t t n n n n

0 x x x x x x x

0 x x x x x x x

There are only 7 bits, in each byte, to represent the unique data that the message byte contains. It can easily be calculated that there are only 2^7, or 128, discrete values available per byte. This means that there are 8 fundamental types of status message (t) which, if a channel specific message, can be sent to any one of 16 different MIDI Channels. If the status message is not channel specific the lower nibble (4 bits) of the status represents one of 16 different message sub-classes.

There are two different classifications of MIDI messages: MIDI Data Messages and MIDI System Messages. MIDI Data Messages are channel specific, MIDI System Messages are not channel specific.

All values are in HEX type='text'>The Midi Interface - By John Moxey

The Musical Instrument Digital Interface was developed in the early 1980s as a way of allowing musical instruments from a variety of manufacturers to communicate. The MIDI specification defines the electrical characteristics of the MIDI interface and the communications protocol used.

To the user the physical interface appears as 3 different types of MIDI ports: MIDI In; MIDI Out; and MIDI Thru. These ports can be connected together using MIDI cables, which are in fact cables that use 5-pin DIN connection plugs.

MIDI In
MIDI data enters each item of MIDI equipment through the MIDI In port. For example, when you send MIDI information from your sequencer to your synth or sampler, it enters the synth/sampler using the MIDI In port.

MIDI Out
All the MIDI data generated by individual pieces of equipment are sent out through the MIDI Out port. For example, if you play notes on a controller keyboard and the sounds are generated on an external sound module, the note information is sent from the controller keyboard using the controller keyboard MIDI Out port.

MIDI Thru
These are used to re-transmit all information received at the MIDI In port using the MIDI Thru port connections. Often these ports are used to create a chain of connected devices in a single MIDI data path, called a 'daisy chain'. Some devices, commonly computers, do not have a dedicated MIDI Thru port. Instead they use a software MIDI Thru port that shares the same physical MIDI connection as the MIDI Out port.

Cables

The longer the MIDI cable, the more likely that the data sent down that cable will have an error in it. Electrically this is because the longer the cable, the higher the electrical resistance that cable has. This causes the signal to degrade, eventually resulting in errors. As a general guide keep your MIDI cables to the shortest possible length.

MIDI Layout

Daisy Chain
If you connect the MIDI Out port of your controller device (keyboard, sequencer etc) to the MIDI In port of another device (probably a sound module) you can play sounds stored on the sound module by pressing a key or playing a MIDI file on your controller device.

If you want to play sounds stored on two separate sound modules you can chain the devices together in a daisy chain. To do this, connect the MIDI Out port of the controller device to the MIDI In port of sound module 1 and connect the MIDI Thru of sound module 1 to the MIDI In port of sound module 2.

This process can be continued for more MIDI devices by connecting MIDI Thru ports to the MIDI In port of the next device in the chain. Be aware that if the chain is larger than 3 devices, there is a chance that MIDI data will be corrupted and delays in communicating the MIDI signal to the device at the end of the chain become audible. This means that the time it takes to tell the module at the end of the MIDI chain to play a note is long enough to make the note sound late in comparison with the notes played on the first device in the MIDI chain. A symptom of this would be that instruments played on a device at the end of a MIDI daisy chain are consistently out of time, namely the notes are always played late!

Star Network
In order to reduce MIDI delays caused by a long MIDI chain, use of a MIDI distribution unit can be used. This type of unit takes essentially one MIDI input stream of 16 channels and then distributes that data stream to a number of MIDI Out ports.

Multi Port
Similar to a Star network except that this solution provides up to 8 separate MIDI ports to a computer based sequencer. This means that each of the 8 ports has 16 channels and a dedicated MIDI Out port. This allows for 8 separate MIDI data streams which can reduce congestion if parts that occur at the same time are distributed across a number of different MIDI devices. It also has the advantage of giving you access to up to 128 different MIDI channels!

MIDI Problems MIDI LoopsA MIDI loop is created when a MIDI message comes back to the same device for a second time. This commonly caused when the MIDI Thru port of one device in the MIDI chain is connected to the MIDI In port of the controller device. In this circumstance a message, such as a Note On, is sent to the controller keyboard sound engine directly and it is sent round the MIDI loop to appear at the controller keyboard MIDI In port. The result is that the sound will be played twice. On many sounds this will create a flanged, out of phase sound. If you are using a percussive or monophonic sound the double notes will sound obvious.

The solution is simple. Make sure that the controller keyboard is set to Local Off. This stops the sounds being sent directly to the controller keyboard sound engine.

Congestion
MIDI is a serial communications format. This means that MIDI messages are sent one at a time across the MIDI interface. This can however cause problems. If you are running a sequence there are likely to be several events scheduled to occur at the same moment in time, for example the first beat in a bar. Because it takes time to transmit ech and every MIDI message timing errors can be introduced. Basically it can take so long to transmit all the events that are supposed to occur at any one point in time that by the time the event message gets to the playback device it is already too late! Unfortunately if you have all the events occurring at the same time you have no control over which events are played back late. This can be avoided by ensuring that percussive sounds are played back exactly where you want them. Less noticable sounds, in terms of timing, can then be moved forward or backward a couple of ticks. This way you control what is happening.

Useful Tips

Recording
If you are recording a new instrument part it can be useful to solo that track to reduce any MIDI errors being introduced due to MIDI congestion caused by the playback of existing tracks.

MIDI Resolution
It can be worthwhile learning how many MIDI ticks make up a quarter note on your system. For example, if your system uses a resolution of 96 MIDI Ticks per quarter note you acn easily work out the number of ticks needed for other note timings.

MIDI Based FX

Delay
Some sequencers will offer the ability to create a delay effect, this is done by using MIDI notes. This can however be done by any sequencer user simply by copying the prt in question to a new track, and then shifting the part by the number of ticks necessary to achieve the delay time required (see MIDI resolution). Take the copied track and then scale the velocities or adjust the track volume to give you a feed back level (the volume of the echo). The feedback approach used will depend on if the same MIDI channel is being used for both the original and the echoed track. This approach will not work with monophonic patches as it requires a polyphonic syth to work without cutting the previous sound.

Ping-Pong Delay
Similar to delay except that you require 2 separate MIDI channels. Pan the original track to the left and the echoed track to the right and you have a ping pong delay. You can play with peoples heads even more by changing the panning for each track.

Cross Fades
Cross fades can be used to achieve a sound morphing effect. To do this copy a MIDI part to another track using a different patch. Then simply reduce the volume of one track while you increase the volume of the other track and hey presto, the sound morphs!

Guide to Finding Music Online

Are you frustrated because finding your favorite songs on the net has become more of a chore than an enjoyable activity? Read this simple guide to finding music online and your troubles will be out of mind before you download your next Green Day hit!

MP3s are compressed music files that are one-tenth the size of regular audio files. As a normal audio file requires about 40 megabytes to download, and MP3 requires four. Although this is still a substantial number, it is much more manageable for the average computer. Thus began the MP3 downloading, sharing and trading craze. There are a variety of options when it comes to playing your MP3s. Media Player comes with Windows, QuickTime 4 comes with Macintosh, and Win amp is the industry standard product.

Music can be downloaded from websites or FTP sites. Websites are easier to use. Songs download automatically when you click on the titles. Finding good websites to download from is difficult. The sites that used to work well now dabble in other venues. AlltheWeb.com and MP3.com usually only contain independent, unknown bands that may be great, but if you're looking for the stuff you've heard of, you'll be wasting your time. Audiofind now carries radio stations instead of music files, and Audiogalaxy.com Music Search requires a subscription.

Good websites to use are LycoMP3 Search, MP3 Search on Altavista, MP3 Search at Astraweb, and MP3Bot Search Engine. FTP sites usually require special software. Some free software options include WS FTP and FTP Explorer. Oth Net (Kermit search) is a clean fast way to download from FTP sites directly from the browser that works even better than the software options.

In the wake of the Napster downfall, it has become mostly illegal to download and share free music files on the web. Musicians are opposed to the practice, and rightly so, because the free music sharing significantly affects the commercial success of their CD sales in stores. Downloaders tend to think musicians are being unfair by revoking the free music files from the net, but one must remember that selling music is their career. It is nearly impossible to find full albums on the web. These days, musicians will release a couple of new hits onto the net to try to entice the web surfing crowd to wander into the music store and buy the full album. Remember, if all else fails and you MUST have the MP3 of a song, there are thousands of sites to which you can subscribe and pay for the downloads.

New bands are always willing to put their music out on the Internet in hopes of getting heard, so free downloads are limitless if you are willing to lend your ear to some new tunes. For me, I used to have hundreds of MP3 files lumped in one folder in my hard drive. Can you imagine the pain I had to go through to find one specific tune to listen to? Organizing your music files is an important skill to learn. Once your collection is nicely sorted out, you'll be able to find the songs you want quickly and easily. So set aside some time and read through the following tips I've come up with.

Create Subfolders. The single most important tip for organizing your music files is to create subfolders in your hard drive. Don't ever leave your MP3 files in one huge folder called C:My Music. Create subfolders like C:My MusicClassical, C:My MusicPop and C:My MusicSoundtracks.

Ensure your ID3 Tags Are Correct. ID3 tags are used to store important information about MP3 files. Things like the song title, artist, album are kept and will be displayed by your MP3 player. Take the time to properly edit these tags - many MP3 files you download have the ID3 tag information all wrong. A good software program for editing ID3 tags is TagScanner.

Invest in Good Music Management Software. There are several excellent pieces of software out there for managing music files. Two good ones come to mind. The first is MediaMonkey and the second is MusicMatch Jukebox. Both programs offer excellent music management features like an integrated music player, CD burning features and ID3 tag renaming.

Get Your Music Files from Legal Sources. If you've been downloading music using P2P (peer-to-peer) file sharing programs like KaZaa, you will very likely get music files which have strange names like 56_HeyjAck.mp3. My advice: Get your files from legal sources like online music services iTunes or Napster and you will avoid this problem.

Create Good Playlists. Most software music player (e.g. Winamp) will allow you to create playlists. For example, say you're in the mood for rock songs, you can point to your folder called C:MusicRock and create a playlist from that folder. Save the playlist after it is created. When you next feel like listening to those songs, all you need to do is load that playlist instead of trawling through your hard drive and folders.

Get A Huge Hard Drive. I know this sounds a little crazy - but running out of disk space can and will ruin your well-organized music collection. Make sure you have enough hard disk space to store your music files. Say you have 10,000 music files that you absolutely must retain and listen to. It is a very bad idea to store, say, 8,000 files in Hard Drive A and 2,000 files in Hard Drive B. Very messy. It's better to store them all in one hard disk. So get your hands on the biggest hard drive you can find.

Conclusion

I hope this article helps you to organize your music collection a little better. I know it takes effort, but once your music collection is properly catalogued, listening to your music collection will be a much more pleasant experience. So don't hesitate - get organized now!(Gary Hendricks is computer enthusiasts.
